The present invention is a novel process for the preparation of chalcogenone compounds by conversion of ionic liquids and salts comprisingnitrogen-containing heterocyclic cations and basic anions to the corresponding nitrogen-containing heterocyclic chalcogenones by reaction with elemental chalcogens.
