This invention features a method for producing the glycoprotein G of the rabies virus, or a virus related to the rabies virus, characterised by: i) introducing, into a plant cell, a nucleic acid molecule comprising a chimeric coding sequence, comprising one coding sequence for the said mature viral protein G, or for an analogous protein, and a coding sequence for a N-terminal signal peptide other than the one naturally associated with the viral protein G, enabling the expression of the protein G in the cell; ii) multiplying, in the form of cell culture, transformed cells, or regeneration of whole transgenic or chimerical plants from these cells; iii) optionally extracting and purifying the glycoprotein G from the cells or plants thus obtained.
