By measuring four parameters of compressor operation, the output temperature is estimated, allowing pressure release action to be taken when required. An estimated value of the temperature at the output of the compressor (4) is derived from four parameters - the ambient temperature, the speed of the compressor, the output pressure of the compressor and the speed of a pulser (18) associated with the heat exchanger. The estimated value is compared with a threshold to produce a signal which can control momentary discharge of pressure, using a fluid discharge valve (16). This has the effect of lowering the temperature of the refrigerant fluid at the compressor output and limiting the heating.
