PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tape recorder having a tape positioning count backup function wherein the tape position can be backed up accurately and fear of exceeding the write life of a nonvolatile memory can be lessened by a comparatively simple method. SOLUTION: A microcomputer A5 counts the output of a reel rotation number detector 3 for outputting a frequency signal proportional to the rotation number of a reel for winding up a recording tape and, on the occasion of writing the count value in an EEPROM 4, does not write the count values every count-up of the reel FG count value during the tape running, but writes the count values at specified fixed time intervals, this equalizing the number of writes within unit time, irrespective of the reel rotation number. Thus the write-life of the EEPROM can be prolonged.
