摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a monitoring method in which an optical fiber buried in a material can function usefully as a reinforcing material and whose detecting accuracy by the optical fiber can be enhanced so as to correspond to the most important initial dame of the material when the damage of the material is detected. SOLUTION: Many multimode optical fibers 2 as reinforcing cords are buried in a composite material 1, and a structure member is constituted. The multimode optical fibers 2 which constitute a part of a monitoring apparatus used to detect the initial damage at the inside of the actual structure member can be used also as a reinforcing member. Even when the diameter of every core 3 in every buried multimode optical fiber 2 is comparatively large, a characteristic that the thickness of every clad 4 is thin is used, a reinforcing function is displayed effectively without lowering the strength of the composite material 1, a change in the absorbance due to the 'creep of light' into the composite material 1 for evanescent waves is measured easily, and the initial damage of the composite material 1 can be sensed in advance.
