<p>A dish-shaped combustion chamber(14) is formed in a diesel engine piston(13), and a fuel injector(16) is installed on the center axis of this combustion chamber(14). A device(3,41) is provided for varying the intake air amount aspirated into the engine. It is determined whether the engine is an idle running state or a normal running state.
