A digital ticket (1) is procured from a provider, preferably over the Internet, by a consumer. The digital ticket (1) becomes embodied in a tangible transportable data medium, normally in the form of a 2-D bar code (11) printed on paper by the consumer, or on the consumer's flexible disk, CD-ROM or smart card. The ticket is generated by the consumer selecting a number R, and sending hash(R) to the provider. The provider concatenates information about the selected service which the ticket is associated with, to hash(R), signs the results, and sends Sign(s,I∥hash(R)) to the consumer. The consumer then concatenates R to form Sign(s,I∥hash(R))∥R as part of the ticket. For use, the ticket is transported, in a physical medium, to the redemption point and presented. Verification takes place by using the private key of the provider to recover information about the event, and hash(R). R is then hashed and compared proving the legitimacy of the ticket. |
