PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quicken rising time and to realize power saving by reducing heat loss at the rising time in a fixing device having a radiation heater. SOLUTION: This fixing device 16 fixing a toner image formed on a sheet on the sheet is equipped with a radiant heat source consisting of the radiation heater 23 having a glass tube 28 in which a filament 29 and enclosed gas including inert gas are hermetically enclosed, and a heating member consisting of a heating roller 18 housing the radiant heat source inside. The inert gas enclosed in the glass tube 28 is principally composed of krypton or xenon, and the tungsten filament 29 is made to be a thin filament and set so that its color temperature may be >=250 K, then the quantity of heat retained in the filament 29, the glass tube 28 and the inert gas in the radiant heat source just after supplying power is reduced.
