PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine start system capable of securing a reliability. SOLUTION: This engine start system comprises a belt type starter 2 and an auxiliary starter 3 for starting an engine 1. The belt type starter 2 performs the starting of the engine in preference to the starting by the auxiliary starter 3 in economical running mode. When the starting of the engine by the belt type starter 2 is hard (or impossible), the auxiliary starter 3 performs the starting of the engine in pace of the belt type starter 2. The auxiliary starter 3 is a general gear type starter (a system in which a pinion gear is meshed with a ring gear on engine side at the start of the engine to transmit a rotational force). With this constitution, even if the belt type starter 2 or a belt 6 becomes defective and the starting of the engine by the belt type starter 2 is hard (or impossible), a vehicle can be run by switching the engine for starting by the auxiliary starter 3.
