FIELD: lubricants. SUBSTANCE: lube oil freezing point depressant is prepared by radical polymerization of methacrylic acid esters obtained from esterification of methacrylic acid by C8-C12 and C16- C20 alcohol fractions taken at molar ratio (1-3):(3-1), respectively, to give polymer with cinematic viscosity up to 3500 cSt at 50 C. Polymerization is preferably carried out at 90-110 C in presence of polymerization initiator, molecular weight regulator, and organic solvent taken in amount 90-120% of the weight of monomer, said initiator being benzoyl peroxide or dinitylo-azo-bisisobutyric acid, or cumene hydroperoxide, and said molecular weight regulator being laurylmercaptane or tert-dodecylmercaptane.
