A backpulser is used to deliver very short back pulses to the membrane during filtration. A method for improving the filtration capacity of a filter membrane involves using a backpulser to deliver very short back pulses to the membrane during filtration of a fluid. Independent claims are also included for; (1) A backpulser for pulsing a given amount of filtered liquid through a membrane in the reverse direction so that a temporary change in the amount of liquid passing through the membrane and in the liquid flow direction is achieved; and (2) A backpulser comprising a displacement body (40) capable of moving a given amount of filtered liquid back through a filter membrane towards the unfiltered liquid.
