PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lens exchange type camera capable of carrying out display control in a proper timing when dust and dirt do not intrude into the camera, and to provide a control method of such a lens exchange type camera. SOLUTION: The lens exchange type camera a photographing lens 21 of which is interchangeable is configured of: an imaging element 2 for imaging an object image via the photographing lens 21; a monitor section 7 for displaying an image outputted from the imaging element 2; a monitor section 7 for displaying an image outputted from the imaging element 2; a focal plane shutter 37 arranged between the photographing lens 21 and the imaging element 2 and including a light shield member progressing to/retracting from the inside of a photographing optical path; and an in-body CPU 1 for controlling the focal plane shutter 37 to be escaped from the photographing optical path in response to mount of the photographing lens 21 and the execution of an incoming operation by the imaging element 2 and a display operation by the monitor section 7.
