PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recording apparatus which detects whether or not each of recording heads for a forward path and for a return path is usable in a constitution with the two recording heads for the forward path and for the return path set by the same color, and which can continue recording by using the other recording head even if one recording head is detected to be unusable due to an ink lack or the like. SOLUTION: The number of discharging times of each nozzle of the recording heads is counted. The recording head with the count value which reaches a predetermined value is judged as unusable. If the other recording head of the same color as that of the recording head judged as unusable is usable, both forward and rearward recording is carried out by the recording head. An application order of ink is changed at this alternative recording head depending on an arrangement position. However, a change of color due to a difference of an overlapping order of the ink can be prevented by preliminarily subjecting image data to color conversion corresponding to the application order of ink.
