PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device capable of obtaining a substantially constant dimming illuminance for almost the whole period of service life from the start to the end of the service life for using an illuminance sensor, an accumulating timer, etc. SOLUTION: In the high pressure discharge lamp lighting device for lighting a discharge lamp by supplying AC power to a high pressure discharge lamp, first output power W1 is outputted at a first output voltage V1, and second output power W2 larger than the first output power W1 is outputted at a second output voltage V2 larger than the first output voltage V1. The first output voltage V1 is a voltage value of the discharge lamp when the high pressure discharge lamp is in an early stage of the service life, and the second output voltage V2 is a voltage value of the discharge lamp when the high pressure discharge lamp is in an end stage of the service life.
