Fuel cell comprises a container, an anode sepd. from a cathode, the cathode contg. at least catalytic amts. of a transition metal oxide, buffered electrolyte of pH 7-10 e.g. a mixt. of acid and normal alkali carbonates, and device for providing fuel to the anode and oxidant to the cathode. The cell has the advantage of using relatively cheap stable catalyst compsns. in conjunction with an electrolyte which does not react substantially with the prodts. of combustion of the hydrocarbon fuel used.
