Halogen-2-hydroxy-diphenyl ethers are useful in bactericidal compositions and method in the protection of organic materials. Illustrative compounds are 2',4,4',5-tetrachloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether, 4,4',5-trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether, 2',4,4'-trichloro-5-bromo-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether and 4,4'-dichloro-5-bromo-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether.
