1385910 Metal-air cells JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 5 May 1972 [15 May 1971] 15175/71 Heading H1B A metal-air cell 10 comprises a strip 11 of micro-porous PTFE folded about its centre line and metallized, e.g. with nickel, on its upper surface as shown in Fig. 2. The metallized surface supports a layer 12 of catalytically active material extending on both sides of the fold in the strip 11 to define a pair of electrically interconnected air electrodes. The layer 12 is covered by a strip 13 of porous, insulating, weldable material of the same dimensions as the strip 11 and which may be of polyamide material having the name Bondina (Registered Trade Mark). Between the folded portions of the strip 13 is positioned an anode 14 comprising a silver grid supporting a porous zinc structure and between each side of the anode and the strip 13 is a permeable bag 15 of cellulose xanthate film or of Bondina and filled with KOH in powder or flake form. Electrical connections to the anode 14 and active material 12 are made by leads 16, 17 having PVC sleeves 18 at the periphery of the strips 11, 13. A removable pin 19 is placed on the strip 13 and the edges of the folded strips 11, 13 are welded by an ultrasonic welding tool (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) to form a sealed compartment. To activate the cell, the pin 19 is removed to provide an opening 25 through which water is introduced, this water permeating the walls of the bags 15 to form the electrolyte. |
