A flexible shaft seal, pressed radially or axially onto the shaft optionally by a spring comprises a number of fibres projecting out from the sealing face of the seal., so that their free ends point towards the fluid side which is to be sealed. Thus, as the shaft rotates, the fibres become deflected and adopt a position at an angle so that they tend to force fluid back against the direction in which it is endeavouring to penetrate the seal. The fibres may be attached to the face of the sealing ring or formed of the fibrous matl. of the ring itself, in partic. where the ring is of a non-woven matl. A sealing ring with unoriented projecting fibres may be used, in which the dia. of the surface is smaller on the medium side than on the other side. The seal has a self-adjusting twist which always ensures, regardless of the direction of rotation of the shaft, that the angle of the fibres deflects the fluid back to the side from which approaches.
|
