INTERLEAVED SURGICAL DRAPE

1432116 Surgical drape KENDALL CO 2 May 1974 [3 May 1973] 19326/74 Heading ASR [Also in Divisions Dl and D2] A surgical drape is constituted by a sheet 22 of flexible material which has been folded lengthwise to reduce its width and then widthwise to form a base section and end portions which extend from opposite ends of the base section, are fan-folded and are interleaved with one another. The sheet is preferably rectangular and is folded longitudinally, to form a central panel with a stack of side panels fan-folded over the central panel at each side, and then laterally to form the base section and the fan-folded and interleaved end portions. A first embodiment (Figures 7-10) has the length of the longitudinally-folded drape divided into anodd number of contiguous intermediate sections b, c, d, e and f, section d forming the base section, and a pair of end sections a and g, the intermediate sections being of equal length, the end sections each being one half of this length. The sections e, f and g and a, b and c are folded on top of the base section d and interleaved as shown in Figures 9 and 10. A simplified method of folding disclosed consists of bringing edge 26b to the centre of section b and then fanfolding the drape. A second embodiment (Fig. 15 not shown) has one end section (g) omitted. A third embodiment (Fig. 16 not shown) consists of (2i+3) contiguous sections of approximately equal length, where i=1, 2, 3.., n, and the two endmost sections adjacent one end edge (226b) are overlapped along a fold line (234) while the end most section adjacent the opposite end of the drape is positioned under these two sections. A fourth embodiment (Fig. 17 not shown) has (2i+2) contiguous sections of approximately equal length, where i=1, 2, 3,.... n. In this case the longitudinally-folded drape is first folded laterally at the centre of its length and the resultant folded drape is then further folded in a fan- or concertina manner.
