1441653 Mechanical seals FEODOR BURGMANN DICHTUNGSWERK 8 June 1973 [9 June 1972 27 July 1972] 27384/73 Heading F2B A mechanical seal assembly, e.g. for a pump impeller shaft 1, comprises two co-operating pairs of slip rings 10, 12, 11, 13 and a system for circulating a fluid barrier- and cooling medium. The medium, from the high pressure side h of the seal, enters a chamber k surrounding a shaft sleeve 4, a centrifugal disc 25 on the sleeve 4 preventing clogging by solid particles. Flow continues through a passage z, non-return valve 30, magnetic filters 23, 19, air-release valve 20, heat exchanger 21 and bore 16 to a chamber a adjacent the low pressure side of the seal. A body 6, having a conveyer thread 7 and arranged to rotate with the shaft 1, acts to pump the medium into a chamber b adjacent the high pressure side of the seal, and recycling occurs through a bore 17 and non-return valve 18. A gas-pressurized reservoir 40 is preferably provided in the circuit, and a base portion 141 of a seal housing 14 may have a chamber 28 for circulation of coolant, e.g. water.
