Refuse treatment plant with overhead travelling grapnel - has grapnel arms shaped to match refuse trough for reduced wear and shock

A refuse treatment installation has a large metal trough (11) located below the level (17) at which refuse collection vehicles can discharge, and above which is a grapnel (12) for lifting material from the trough. The grapnel is suspended from a carriage (13) travelling on rails over the trough so that the material can be raised to the level of a hopper (14) at one end, discharging onto a belt conveyor (15). This conveyor then discharges into a grinding machine (19). The grapnel has e.g. five arms and the bottom of the trough is especially shaped to match the rounded shape of these curved arms, to ensure efficient removal of material with reduced wear and shock between the arms and the sides and base of the trough.
