The waste water is treated with hydrogen peroxide at from 5 to 100 DEG C and pH 0-7 in the presence of metals which liberate hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide to reduce the COD content of the waste water by subjecting the waste water to the action of hydrogen peroxide in amounts of from 0.1 to 1.7 g, based on the COD concentration in g/l of waste water, and hydroxyl-liberating metal ions in amounts of from 0.01 to 1 mol per mole of hydrogen peroxide, then neutralising with or without flocculation and removal of the flocculated matter, and subjecting the waste water obtained to biological water treatment by the activated sludge process.
|
