PURPOSE:To discriminate whether or not a character of an original is a printed letter or a manuscript, by obtaining a parameter relating to the mode of arrangement of picture elements at the boundaries of individual characters. CONSTITUTION:Binary picture element signals obtained from the scanning of an original is sequentially stored in a buffer 9. A character cutout circuit 10 counts number of black picture elements at each main scanning line of picture elements in the buffer 9 and cuts out each character as a character line, when the number is counted for a prescribed number or over. An output of the circuit 10 is inputted to a character type discriminating circuit 21 and parameter calculation circuits 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 to calculates parameters P1-P5. The output of the parameter calculation circuits is inputted to parameter distance calculation circuits 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, where the distance as the printed letter and that of the manuscript are calculated as to each parameter, and the result of calculation is applied to a discrimination circuit 22. Thus, whether the character is the printed letter of the manuscript is discriminated, allowing to accurately recognize characters of the original mixed with the printed letters and the manuscripts. |
