PURPOSE:The reaction between carbon monoxide, hydrogen and formalin aqueous solution is carried out in one stage or in two stages, at a lower temperature in the first stage and higher one in the second, in the presence of a cobalt catalyst to produce ethylene glycol in high yield and high reproducibility. CONSTITUTION:Aqueous formalin solution readily available by oxidation of methanol, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are made to react, preferably in a solvent, in the presence of a cobalt catalyst in one stage at 100-220 deg.C or in two stages, at 40-100 deg.C, then at 150-220 deg.C under the total pressure of 10-1,000atm. to produce the objective compound. The cobalt catalyst is preferably a combination of a cobalt compound such as dicobalt octacarbonyl with a trivalent phosphorus compound such as 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane. The amount of the catalyst is suitably 0.2-0.002mol based on the formaldehyde used, calculated as Co. |
