PURPOSE:To obtain the titled reducing agent simply, by reacting a racemic modification of 1,1'-bis-2-naphthol with an optically active specific sulfoxide so that the racemic modification is subjected to optical resolution, reducing the reaction product with lithium aluminum hydride in the presence of a lower alcohol. CONSTITUTION:Preferably eqimolar amounts of racemic modification of 1,1'-bis- 2-naphthol and a compound [e.g., (-)-methyl-mo-tolylsulfoxide, etc.] shown by the formula (Ar is aryl, or aralkyl; R is lower alkyl) are reacted in a solvent such as benzene, etc. to give an inclusion compound [e.g., selectively bonded to (S)-(-)-form of naphthol when sulfoxide is (-)-form], which, for example, treated with silica gel comlumn, etc., to give optically active 1,1'-bis-2-naphthol. This compound is reduced with LiAlH4 in the presence of an alcohol shown by the formula R'OH (R' is lower alkyl) in a solvent such as THF, to give the desired reducing agent.
