PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of calculation, to remove incorrect stroke correspondence and to attain comparatively rapid and stable stroke correspondence by adding pattern separation information to a dictionary pattern and limiting the stroke correspondence in each radical in accordance with the pattern separating information. CONSTITUTION:When an input character pattern is inputted to an input pattern storage circuit 1, a dictionary character pattern having the same picture element as said pattern is sent from a dictionary 3 to a dictionary pattern storage circuit 4 and simultaneously the radical separation information of the dictionary character pattern is sent to a separation information storing circuit 12. In response to the radical separation information, a start stroke No.1 is set up in a register 13 at first and then an end stroke No.2 is set up in a register 14. The corresponding strokes are successively extracted from an input pattern storing circuit 2 and a dictionary pattern storing circuit 5 by an input stroke extracting circuit 2 and a dictionary stroke extracting circuit 5 and sent to a distance calculating circuit 6 to calculate the distance of the strokes. Similar processing is repeated in the succeeding respective radicals.
