PURPOSE:To set brake timing and to reproduce a still picture at an optimum position by measuring pilot signals of a four-frequency tracking system and the rotational frequency of a capstan. CONSTITUTION:When a slow playback mode is commanded, the frequency of generation of a speed detection signal which is supplied from a control circuit 4 to an adder through a deceleration signal changeover switch S1 at specific timing and generate in a deceleration period is counted and denoted as FGST. If an edge of a head switching signal is detected after the run of a tape stops, ''1'' is added to the register in the controller 4 at every specific time, and when the instantaneous level of a tracking error signal decreases down to ''0'', the data in the register is read out to calculate the quantity FGS of tape transport. Then, said frequency of generation FGGEN is calculated from FGS-FGST as data for setting deceleration timing in step operation. When the step operation is entered, an acceleration signal is supplied to the adder 5 through S1. Then, when the frequency of generation of pulses as the speed detection signal attains to FGGEN, a deceleration command is generated and the tape stops.
