PURPOSE:To prepare a fluorescent material useful for fluorescent lamp, cathode- ray tube, fluororoentogenography, etc., easily with a simple process, by the anodic oxidation of a substrate composed of a metal, etc. containing a fluorescent dopant in an alkaline bath containing a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:A substrate composed of metal or alloy containing usually 0.1-5wt% fluorescent dopant such as Mn, Cd, etc. (e.g. Al, Mg, Zn, Al-Mg alloy, etc.) is subjected to the anodic oxidation in an alkaline bath containing (A) an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate, borate and/or phosphate (e.g. KOH), (B) an alkali metal fluoride (e.g. KF) and (C) aluminum hydroxide (preferably an aqueous solution containing 80-300g/l of the component A, 20-300g/l of the component B and 20-100g/l of the component (C) to obtain the objective fluorescent material.
