This instrument is of the type comprising a resonating body 1, consisting of a box 3, 5 and a sound board 4, and on which the strings 8 are stretched, the vibrations in the strings 8 being transmitted to the resonating body 1 via a bridge 7 fixed on to the sound board 4. According to the invention, the strings 8 are fixed directly on to the box 3, 5 and means are provided to allow transmission by the bridge 7 of the vibrations in the strings 8 to the sound board 4. The parts 2, 3, 5 of the body of the instrument which are to fulfil the mechanical functions are made from a composite material. In this manner, the sound board 4 is free from any mechanical constraint and can be designed solely to suit the requirements of vibrational efficiency. <IMAGE>
