The Liesst effect is understood as being the transition from the low-spin state to the high-spin state, associated with which in the case of many transition metal compounds is a characteristic colour change. By irradiating with light of suitable wavelength, the transition from one spin state into the other is brought about and reversed again. One of a plurality of light sources (L1, L2, L3) of different wavelength can be positioned according to choice in front of the entrance of an optical arrangement which focuses the light beam of this light source on a recording medium (AT). The recording medium (AT) reflects the light emitted by the light source onto a photodetector. The light sources (L1, L2, L3) may be located, for example, on a common support which is designed as a rail (S1), a rotatable disc or a drum.

|
