The invention relates to a user interface and to a method for assisting a user in the operation of a user interface (1) in a 3-D gesture mode, in which the user interface (1) can be operated by means of gestures performed freely in space, hereinafter referred to as 3-D gestures. The method comprises the following steps: displaying graphical content (2) on a display unit (3) of the user interface; sensing a hand (4) of the user by means of a sensor; and displaying a representation (6) of the hand (4) as a superimposition on the graphical content (2).
