LOCAL AREA NETWORK ASSISTED POSITIONING

A system and method of locating a position of a wireless device in range of one or more base stations. Three signals are received that each contain a unique identifier for a base station. An estimate of the distance between the wireless device and each base station is performed. Previously determined locations for each base station are referenced. At least one of the three base stations is capable of communications to remote locations and unavailable to the wireless device for communication to remote locations[SH1].

1. A location-based services method comprising:
gathering location information for a plurality of base stations by a mobile wireless device, the plurality of base stations comprising a cooperative terrestrial base station that can communicate with the mobile wireless device in a mode that allows unique identification of the mobile wireless device and an uncooperative terrestrial base station capable of bi-directional communications but configured not to support bi-directional non-emergency communications with the mobile wireless device; gathering identification information for each of the plurality of base stations by the mobile wireless device; establishing a bi-directional communication link between the mobile wireless device and a cooperative wireless local area network base station; and sending the location information for the plurality of base stations and the identification information for the plurality of base stations to the cooperative wireless local area network base station from the mobile wireless device.
