[Classes 81 (i) and 81 (ii)] [See also Group XI] An apparatus for hot moistening and pressing out of compresses, for use in inhaling and for sterilizing surgical instruments comprises a heatable water container 1, a container 18 with a perforated bottom for insertion therein, and three different covers to be mounted on the water container individually according to the purpose for which the apparatus is to be used. For the first use referred to, the cover 22, Fig. 5, is provided with two supports 28 in which are mounted the spindles of displaceable and non - displaceable rollers 25, 26. Roller 25 is pressed against the other by springs 29 acting on its spindle. Roller 26 is adapted to be turned by handle 30. An aperture 31 is formed in the cover 22 above the rollers, so that the compress may be passed therethrough to the rollers and into the hot water, whereupon the rollers are reversed to wring out the compress. The cover is provided with handles 32. When the apparatus is to be used for inhalation purposes, the cover 23, Fig. 6, is fitted with a steam outlet pipe 33 which is fitted with a flange 33<2> disposed between the parts 33<1>, 33<3> so as to be rotatable. Herbs or other suitable substances are placed in the container 18, so that they lie in water. Container 18 is supported on rails 17 of the container 1, and may be lifted therefrom by a suitable tool adapted to engage with grips 21. Each of the covers 22, 23 is provided with packing 35, and formed with projections 36 with which clamping members 13 engage to press the covers on to the container 1. When the device is to be used for sterilizing surgical instruments, these are placed in the container 18 in boiling water, and the container 1 is closed by a loosely mounted cover provided with a handle. The container 1 is fitted with handles 12 and suction cups 11 serving as feet Electric heating elements 3 are pressed against the bottom of the vessel by plates 4 and screws 5 working in stirrups 6 bearing against the lower edge of the container.
