A chamber 28 disposed within a former plate for making tubes from a paper web 21 is supplied with air under pressure from a source externally of the plate and communicates with passages 32 provided in the plate and terminating in orifices 31 at the edges and/or surfaces of the plate. As shown, the web passes under plates 11, 12 disposed side-by-side and movable laterally towards and away from one another, the marginal portions 23, 24 of the web being located outwardly of the former-plate assembly and the edges 25, 26 of the web being folded over on the upper surfaces of toe-plates 17, 18 to overlap each other. Boxes 27 forming the chambers 28 are supplied with air under pressure from connectors 29 which air passes to the orifices 31 to move the web slightly off the under surfaces of the plates and thereby reduce the friction between the web and plates. |
