[Class 39 (i).] An arc discharge tube is provided with a control electrode 4 which completely surrounds the discharge space between the anode 3 and cathode 2. The tube contains argon or mercury vapour. The anode may consist of a nickel cup, disc, rod, &c. and the cathode may comprise an enclosure 5 provided with vanes 6 which, together with an outer tube 11 are coated with barium carbonate or other electron-emitting substance. A heater is situated within the enclosure 5. The control electrode 4 may extend in both directions to enclose the anode and cathode and may form a part of the outer container or tube as shown in Fig. 2, in which the anode 3 consists of a graphite rod.
