Driving -arrangements.-An electric motor for individual driving in warping machines or other apparatus by friction gear is slidably supported in such a manner that its driving-pulley is brought into contact with the frictionally driven wheel in the machine when the motor is moved in one direction and into contact with a reverse wheel in the machine when the motor is moved laterally in the other direction. In the intermediate position there is no drive, and when the motor is applied to a warping machine the lever or the like which moves the motor may also control the usual drop bars motion of the machine for tensioning the warp threads. The Figures show the application to a warping machine wherein the motor 1 is moved on its platform by a hand lever 6 so as to bring its friction pulley 2 either into direct contact with (i) the wheel 3 on the spindle 4 which drives the warp roller 4, or (ii) an intermediate friction reduction gear 7, 8 to give a reversed drive to the spindle. This reduction gear is pivotally mounted in a bracket 7 so that it is raised into driving contact with the wheel 3 when the motor is moved to the right. The gate 9 has three positions for the lever 6 corresponding to forward, reverse, and neutral drives. In the reverse position, studs 10 in a plate 10 operated by the lever 6 engage an arm 10 on a vertical spindle 10e, the lower end of which is coupled by a quadrant rack to a sliding bar in the machine frame. This bar is coupled at its other end by a second quadrant rack to a vertical spindle 10 at the other side of the machine, and the rotation of the two spindles causes pins 14 to move the slippers 15 horizontally and so lower the drop bars 16 slowly in succession to take up the slack in the warp as it occurs. When the lever 6 is moved to give forward drive the drop bars are successively raised.
