The present invention addresses the problem of providing an optical layered body which has excellent workability during fabrication of a polarizing plate and whereby the occurrence of cracking in a polarizing plate can be suppressed, a polarizing plate, a method for manufacturing a polarizing plate using the optical layered body, and an image display device having the polarizing plate. This optical layered body has a polarizer, an optically anisotropic layer, and a masking layer in this order, wherein the hardness HB of the masking layer and the hardness HA of a layer adjacent to the side of the masking layer having the optically anisotropic layer satisfies expression (1).
