<p>Synthetic resins for use as adhesives are manufactured by heating phenol, cresol, xylenol, naphthol, &c. with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, furfural, &c. with or without condensing agents, hardening agents, &c. In an example phenol and furfural are heated to 100 DEG C. in the presence of sodium carbonate.ALSO:A resilient rubber-like substance is attached to a rigid surface by interposing a layer of a composition comprising the resilient substance and a synthetic resin insoluble therein, and capable of softening and finally hardening under the influence of heat, and heating the assemblage to cause the resin to adhere to the rigid surface and harden. Examples of resilient substances are rubber, shellac plasticized with glycerine, phenol, &c., vinyl chloride polymers plasticized with amines, aromatic nitro compounds, tanned glue plasticized with glycerine, molasses, &c., polymethylene-polysulphide plastics, which may be caused to adhere to metal, porcelain, glass, wood, &c. Suitable synthetic resins are those made by heating phenol, cresol, cylenol, naphthol, with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, furfural, sulphurphenol aldehyde resins, phenol hexamethylenetetramine resins, urea aldehyde resins, cyclohexanone aldehyde resins, glycerine phthalic anhydride resins. Preferred proportions are 100 parts of rubber &c. to 20-50 parts of the resin. These may be mixed solid, or in solution. According to an example, 100 parts of a mix consisting of 36 parts of rubber, 53 parts of zinc oxide, 8,6 parts of carbon black, 2,2 parts of sulphur, 0,2 parts of methylene p toluidine, are masticated with 40 parts of a solid fusible phenol aldehyde resin, and dissolved in 500 parts of hexalin acetate. Up to 200 parts of benzol or gasoline may be added. A cleaned steel plate is coated with the solution and after drying, a sheet of rubber is applied, and vulcanized under pressure. In a modification, alternate coats of solutions of the resin and resilient substance in a mutual solvent may be applied to the rigid surface to form the cementing layer.
