A cleaner head 4 comprises a cleaner head body 8, a sole plate 10 comprising a rear portion 22 and flexible lateral side portions 52 that define at least part of the periphery of a dirty air opening 32. The rear portion 22 and the flexible lateral side portions 52 are movable relative to the cleaner head body 8 such that, in use, the rear portion 22 and the flexible lateral side portions 52 conform to a surface being cleaned in order to maintain a seal between the cleaner head 4 and the surface. The rear portion 22 may include a rigid portion and a flexible portion and is preferably pivotally connected to or cantilevered with respect to the cleaner head body. The flexible side portions 52 may comprise a resilient material, such as an elastomeric material. The rear portion 22 is preferably arranged such that during use a net pressure acts on the rear portion 22 and presses the rear portion 22 against the surface being cleaned. |
