An inactive pigment such as a titanium pigment is treated with a fatty or resinous soap of an element of group IVA, such as the soaps described in Specification 395,406, whereby the pigment is rendered readily dispersible in a vehicle to form a paint. In examples, a composite titanium pigment containing titanium dioxide and barium sulphate is ground with mineral spirits containing titanium stearate or resinate, or titanium-cobalt-tungate-linoleate. Alternatively, the pigment may first be coated with the soap by treating with a solution of the soap in a solvent and evaporating the latter.
