In a process for continuously converting alkylene hydrocarbons into alcohols by passing them with steam preferably under pressure over a catalyst a combined boiler and heat interchanger, preferably working in countercurrent, is provided to vapourise water and heat the hydrocarbon and steam by means of the reacted gases which are cooled thereby and the alcohol recovered from the condensate. The process may be cyclic and the unused hydrocarbon together with further hydrocarbon may be passed through or over the water in the boiler and heat interchange. Details of the conversion of ethylene into ethyl alcohol over a sulphuric acid catalyst are described.
