A vehicle detection device 10, wherein an image acquisition unit 11 acquires an image inputted from an imaging device 2 capable of capturing an image of the posterior lateral side of a vehicle. Using a discriminator for detecting the front of a vehicle, a first image recognition unit 13 searches an area for detecting a vehicle located to the posterior lateral side in the acquired image, and detects the vehicle from within the area. A second image recognition unit 14: extracts a plurality of feature points from within an area in which the vehicle detected by the first image recognition unit 13 is present, or presumed to be present, in the acquired image; detects an optical flow of the feature points; and tracks the vehicle. When a vehicle located to the posterior lateral side is detected from within the image by the first image recognition unit 13 or the second image recognition unit 14, a detection signal output unit 16 outputs, to a user interface 3, a detection signal indicating that a vehicle has been detected to the posterior lateral side. |
