Method for preparing a sorbent

A method for preparing a sorbent comprises the steps of: forming agglomerates comprising a particulate support material; coating the agglomerates with a coating mixture powder comprising a particulate copper sulphide and a particulate calcining, rehydratable alumina to form a coated agglomerate; and drying to form a dried sorbent. The calcining rehydratable alumina may comprise a calcined amorphous alumina or a transition alumina selected from one or more of Rho-alumina Chi-alumina or pseudo-gamma-alumina. The particulate calcined rehydratable alumina may be a powder with a D50 particle size in the range 1-100 µm. The composition may also include a binder with the support material, the binder being selected from clay binders, cement binders and organic polymer binders. A process for removing one or more heavy metals from a fluid containing heavy metals by contacting the fluid stream with a sorbent prepared according to the above method is also disclosed.
