467,493. Coking processes. MORGAN, J. S. Nov. 12, 1935, No. 31209. [Class 55 (i)] Coal or the like is destructively distilled by being added to a mass of incandescent coke with which it is intimately mixed, part of the coke produced being intermittently or continuously removed and the coke mass being kept incandescent by an intermittent air blast to which steam may be added. A rotating drum 1 may be used having four air boxes 2, with grates 5 to support the fuel, a duct 3 leading through a heat-exchanger 14 to a fan 7. The neck 4 of the drum extends into a chamber 8 with gas valve 10, dust catcher 9, and coke hopper 12. Air is blown by the fan through the coke until it is at a red heat, the combustion gases passing through the heat-exchanger 14 and valve 15 to an outlet 13. Valve 15 is then closed, and valve 10 opened, coal is flung into the drum by the flinging device 16 from a hopper 17. the charge is agitated by rotation of the drum, the distillates escaping through valve 10. The coked residues falls into the hopper 12. Steam or carbon dioxide may be added during the air blast, and steam may also be injected during the distillation period, or the distillation period may be alternated with a steaming period. Secondary air may be used to burn the gas produced during the blowing period. In a modified form of apparatus, a stationary receptacle is employed in which the charge is agitated by spiral agitators. When treating a low grade fuel, a high grade fuel may be mixed therewith, and oil or tar may be sprayed in during the distilling period, or subsequent thereto. Specification 419,444 is referred to.
|
