The present invention provides a novel azo compound having a quenching ability for the material that exhibits a luminescent phenomenon at an excited energy level, a quencher comprising the novel azo compound, a use of the quencher and a method for preparing the azo compound. The quencher according to the present invention may exhibit excellent characteristics in a wavelength absorption region.

1. A quencher comprising a compound represented by the following formula 1:
A1-N═N-A2-N═N-A3   Formula 1 wherein A1 has a structure of the following formula 2 or 3; A2 is a substituted or unsubstituted C6-C12 arylene group, or a substituted or unsubstituted C4-C12 heteroarylene group; and A3 is a substituted or unsubstituted C6-C30 aryl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted C3-C30 heteroaryl group, wherein Z1 to Z4 are each independently CR1 or nitrogen; R1 is hydrogen, a halogen, a C1-C10 alkoxy group, a nitro group, a cyano group or a sulfonyl group; X1 is CH2, NH, sulfur or oxygen; and X2 is CH or nitrogen, wherein Z5 to Z9 are each independently CR2 or nitrogen; R2 is hydrogen, a hydroxyl group, a C1-C10 alkoxy group, NR9R10, a C1-C10 alkyl group, a C1-C10 carboxyl group, or a halogen; and R9 and R1° are each independently hydrogen or a C1-C10 alkyl group.
