Amorphous rubber hydrochlorides are produced by treating undissolved rubber with liquid or gaseous hydrogen chloride at temperatures below -35 DEG C. The products may be dissolved in benzol, toluene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride or ethylene dichloride to form coating or film-forming compositions. Plasticizers such as chlorinated paraffin, diphenyl ether, butyl stearate, and amyl benzene, also paraffin, rosin, chlorinated diphenyls and ethers thereof, antioxidants such as phenyl-b -naphtylamine, diphenyl-amine, o-and p-ditolylamines and rubber accelerators such as hexamethylene tetramine may be added to the solutions, which may be used for coating and impregnating wood, metal fabric or paper, or for making films which may be used for wrappings or for photographic film base. New compounds may be formed by reacting the amorphous rubber hydrochlorides with cyanides, with sulphur chloride, or by hydrolysis. Specification 446,818 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises reacting rubber with hydrogen chloride at temperatures above -35 DEG C. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
