In one example, a multi-controller storage system is described which includes a backend storage to store snapshots of data volumes and storage controllers communicatively connected to each other and to the backend storage. A storage controller of the storage controllers receives an input-output (IO) request to read a snapshot of a data volume assigned an ownership with other storage controller and process the IO request to read the snapshot directly from the backend storage.
