A method of manufacturing a security document 1 comprising a fibrous substrate 2 comprises: (a) providing a fibrous substrate 2 formed by deposition of fibres onto a porous support, the fibrous substrate 2 comprising a window feature 3 formed during the formation of the fibrous substrate 2; wherein the window 3 is an aperture through at least a portion of the thickness of the fibrous substrate 2, through which an insert incorporated within the fibrous substrate is exposed; and/or an aperture through the full thickness of the fibrous substrate 2; (b) detecting from the fibrous substrate 2 the location of the window feature 3on the fibrous substrate 2; and (c) applying a security feature 5 to the fibrous substrate 2 and/or the insert at a position referenced to the detected location of the window feature 3, such that the security feature 5 and the window feature 3 are registered to one another. A security document having the features of a window 3 in a fibrous substrate 2 and a security feature 5 registered to the window 3 is also disclosed; as is an apparatus for forming a security document including a transport assembly and a detector module for detecting a window feature 3 in a fibrous substrate 2. |
