Provided are an observation device and an observation method whereby a subject to be observed such as a cell can be observed in an unlabeled state without enlarging the device. The observation device (1) comprises: a light source unit (5) that emits illumination light upward from below a sample (X); and a photographic optical system (6) that is provided with an objective lens (4), said objective lens (4) converging light having been emitted from the light source unit (5), reflected above the sample (X) and then transmitted through the sample (X), and photographs the transmitted light converged by the objective lens (4) below the sample (X).
