[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XIX] A gauge responsive only to fine surfaces comprises a blunt rider D and a fine stylus I acting differentially. In one arrangement the rider and stylus are connected respectively to the coil system C and the armature G of an electromagnetic pick-up, the coil system and armature both being flexibly connected to a support A. In a modification the support A carries two complete pick-ups, one having a blunt and the other a fine member for engaging the surface. As the members D, I are moved over the surface, member D moves according to the slope and general waviness of the surface, while member I moves according to the fine roughness plus the waviness plus the slope. The resultant response is therefore according to the fine roughness which alone is indicated or recorded. Specification 487,710, [Group XIX], is referred to.
